I spent most of my life hearing my leftist colleagues quote the famous Manifest, but I as a liberal had my doubts, and as my career toke up most of my time, I never came to reading it. But now that I am retired, I did. The result was one big disappointment. I always had a high regard for good historians, and for the rigour of their works. But I can find no rigour here in the Kapital. The concepts are never clearly defined, to the point that the good Karl would have flunked any history exam in any third grade institution. World history has been used in the most superficial way to justify the coming demise of the (undefined) bourgeoisie, and its replacement, through a dialectiacal jump, by an (undefined) working class, the famous proletariat. The more I turned the pages, the more I got irritated by the impossible way of Karl Marx mistreating history, using only the parts that fitted his theory, and dismissing the rest. After having gone through half the book, a funny idea occured to me, which saved the day and which made reading suddenly interesting you have to replace mentally the word "bourgeoisie" by the word "nomenklatura" (i.e. the ruling political class of the FSU, the Former Soviet Union, and presto! you see that Marx has described - as a kind of double entendre- the actual and historic demise, not of the reviled bourgeoise, but that of the 20th century fake paradise of the soldiers and farmers.
It's nice to finally read this in the original language after having had an English copy for years.
A definite must-read if one is interested in Marxism.
